  1. A Description of Winter Squash

History: Squash are native to the Americas and, along with corn and beans, were part of "The Three Sisters" grown by First Nations people for thousands of years. Winter squash are prized for their dense, sweet flesh and storage ability. They have always been popular with home gardeners and by the 1800's, there were hundreds of varieties available. Cultivation: Easy to grow. Squash are heat-lovers and are best started indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost, or direct sown when temperatures and the soil have fully warmed. Sow seed 1-2" deep. Transplant or thin out to 3-4' apart when night-time temperatures have warmed. Companions: corn, beans. Nasturtiums and marigolds deter squash bugs and other pests and oregano helps overall growth.
