    1. A Description of Beans

      History - Beans are native to North America. Together with corn and squash, they were grown by First Nations people as "The Three Sisters" for thousands of years, formed the staple of their diets and were quickly adopted by early European settlers. Cultivation: Beans are warm-weather crops and should not be planted until the soil has warmed. Direct sow them in the garden 1/2" - 1" deep, depending on the size of the seed. Adding compost to the soil improves growth. Repeat plantings every three weeks to prolong your harvest . Companions: Plant summer savoury with beans to repel bean beetles and improve overall growth; marigolds encourage growth and discourage pests.
