About The Cottage Gardener

The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse is a family owned and operated, farm-based seedhouse started by Mary and Dan Brittain. Established in 1996, The Cottage Gardener’s mandate is to provide rare, open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom varieties to both home and market growers. Their daughter, Rachel, joined the family business in 2011 and, as well as having her fingers in a bit of everything, has particular responsibility for overseeing the filling and shipping out of orders. This is a major upgrade for her, considering that when she used to help her parents out at the seed shows, she would wear her own home-made name tag that jokingly stated: "I’m friendly, but useless. Ask my Mom." Though the "ask mom" rule still generally applies, the name tag has been retired for the time being. Their son, Adam, an urbanite, has just discovered the delight of growing his own food in his backyard and his green thumb continues to deepen in colour each year.

The property, located one hour east of Toronto, Ontario is a lovely, secluded 10 acres surrounded by conifers. This provides a unique micro-climate especially conducive to growing and saving seed. We are committed to bringing our customers the highest quality of seed, fair prices, and fast order processing time.

The world’s genetic biodiversity and food security are at great risk- 93% of the varieties available 100 years ago have disappeared and with them, the unique genetic traits they carried. Planting your garden with heirloom seeds accomplishes many things - you help preserve at-risk seeds, you increase your self-sufficiency by being able to save your own seeds and, on top of that, you get to harvest food that actually has taste! Heirlooms will surprise you with their diversity of colour, shape, size and fragrance.

We encourage you to save your own seed and we conduct several seed-saving training sessions throughout the year.
